Construction at Hulhumalé Yacht Marina, an ambitious and significant yacht marina project in the Maldives, is continuing well. Local yachting agencies are optimistic that it will be completed to schedule and to specification, making it a possible future Superyacht hub in the Indian Ocean.

The 18,000 sq m marina is part of a larger project to build a whole new city on a manmade island 8 km northeast of Malè, the capital of the Maldives. It is primarily intended as a safe haven for hundreds of thousands of Maldivians from smaller outlying islands, but the 300-berth marina will also act as a major destination for marine tourism in the tiny but very popular atoll nation.
“Having a good marina here in the Maldives, will help resolve the issues of having to stay at anchor during down time” said Seal Superyacht Maldives Director Abdul Hannan, who has been monitoring the progress of the development since it started about three years ago.
Construction of the 432-hectare island, as well as homes and facilities for about 240,000 people, started in 1996. The marina is planned to open in 2020, providing a variety of services for cruise ships, Superyachts and other pleasure craft. More than 80 per cent of the marine safari services operating in the Maldives already anchor just west of Hulhumalé, so the island is expected to become the new home port for many of them.
As with many international marina, Hulhumalé Yacht Marina is planned to be a leisure destination, rather than just somewhere to berth your boat. As such, the plans include retail shops, restaurants, bars and exhibition space for up to 8,000 people. Aside from the watersports facilities, the marina will have have dry-berth facilities, a boating dock and berths for vessels up to 40 meters.
