Five-star hotel for Komodo dragon visitors

Travellers hoping to see the famous Komodo dragons of Indonesia will soon be able to do so while staying in a luxurious five-star resort. The AYANA Komodo Resort, Waecicu Beach is scheduled to open on 15th September on the island of Flores, east of Bali.

The 205-room hotel will be convenient both for the Bandara Komodo Airport and for trips to see the dragons, which exclusively populate only a handful of Indonesian islands, Flores among them. At the same time, it is intended to maintain the AYANA brand’s signature luxury and wide appeal, serving families, couples and business travellers.

AYANA Plans for Sustainable Tourism

The opening of a five-star hotel represents a significant shift in the style of tourism and tourist expected in the Komodo National Park. However, AYANA Komodo Resort’s general manager, Fernando Arroyo, has stressed that the property will not be sacrificing the local environment just to fill rooms.

“The new hotel does not just represent the opening of 205 new rooms. It represents an opportunity for us to open our minds about the way we contribute to the environment. Our collective aim is for this positive approach to ripple through the decisions of our team members, guests, and our competitors,” he said.

Benefitting the Community

New environmental initiatives at the property include welcoming a resident marine biologist to study the nearby reefs and lead excursions, workshops and presentations to educate guests. AYANA will also be engaging with local and visiting children by incorporating sustainability projects into the activities of the kids’ club and working with local schools. This includes a weekly coral-planting programme and regular beach clean-ups.

Local fishing communities will be benefitting from the new resort as the six restaurants at the AYANA Komodo Resort will be buying and serving their fresh catches. The resort also plans to donate US$1 to the Komodo National Park for each room sold, ensuring both that visitors can have the best possible experience and that the park rangers have the best possible training and facilities to help them protect the area’s natural beauty.
