Local and foreign tourists will soon be able to visit the pearl farms of Myanmar’s Tanintharyi Region, the Myanmar Tourism Federation has announced. The move is part of the gradual opening up of the previously secretive country and the expansion of the burgeoning tourism industry there.
From October, private farms on Golden Island, Jalan Island, Lga Lone La Phal Island and Kyun Su Island will be open three days a week, with no limit to the number of visitors. Guests will also be able to visit a government-run farm in Bokepyin township. All of these locations are close enough together that they could all be reached within a one-day trip.
Visitors will be able to see how the oysters are housed and incubated to produce pearls, which will be available for purchase. They will also be able to snorkel around the newly-accessible islands. However, some restrictions on tourists will remain in force.
“The oysters in pearl farms do not produce pearls when there is noise, so we will pick up tourists using small boats,” said U Myo Win Than, who is a central executive member of the Myanmar Tourism Federation, a tour operator and a pearl farm owner. “We need to carefully maintain the environment of these farms to ensure the quality of the pearls. Environmental conservation is compatible with eco-tourism.”
